Turmeric Oatmeal with Cinnamon

By now, you’ve probably seen bright yellow milk, smoothies, and lattes pop up on your Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest feed. This color comes from turmeric, a spice quickly growing popularity in the health world.

So what’s all the fuss about? Turmeric is a powerful spice, loaded with antioxidants. It boasts anti-inflammatory properties and is believed to help protect against diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer, as well as alleviate symptoms from arthritis, depression, and more.

What I like about turmeric is that it can be used in sweet or savory recipes. It has an earthy flavor, with undertones of citrus and ginger. Because of it’s earthiness, I thought that it would pair well with cinnamon and vanilla. Cinnamon automatically reminds me of oatmeal, so there was no doubt that I had to try the combination of cinnamon and turmeric in my oats.

You can find turmeric in any grocery store, although I highly recommend buying it from Trader Joe’s. The spices there are much more affordable than your standard store.

The oats are a delicious start to the day and even taste good when you make them the night before and store in a Mason jar. I suggest topping them with raisins, coconut, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbs maple syrup (optional)

Directions

In a small bowl, boil the water. Once boiling, add in the oats and turn heat down to low.

When most of the water has been absorbed, but there is still a small amount remaining, add in the turmeric, cinnamon, vanilla, and maple syrup (or save it and drizzle on top). Stir well.

When the rest of the water is absorbed to your liking, scoop into a bowl and serve hot with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
